Banket



Several people are asking: WHAT IS BANKET? Banket is a traditional Dutch pastry that is made in long tubes of pastry. It is a flaky, fragile crust with almond type filling and coated lightly with egg whites and sugar. A typical stick is about 12-16 inches long and 2 inches wide. To serve it, it is often cut into bite size slices. It is unbelievably delicious, and any time I have served it to non-Dutch people, they have just about died from the deliciousness. Many people try to make it, but often it turns out tough and bland. If you ask most dutch people they will tell you if made properly it is amazing, however, most people cant make it. Its complicated to get the crust to be flaky and flavored correctly, and its a messy two day process. I love to make and i love to eat it even more! It is a wonderful thing, and is totally worth the very involved and time-consuming preparation.
